OUR CONCEPT, phases of the tide
Phase I : Lumeur
A golden and amber light existing only for 20 minutes, arriving at the end of a long day near the water - the kind that makes ordinary things look like they were painted. The French have a word for it. Lumeur.
Phase II : Étale
The tide has been moving all morning. Then, without ceremony, it stops. There is a moment the sea holds its breath - when the water neither advances nor retreats. Twelve minutes, on average. Étale.
Phase III : Laisse
A line of remnants still holding the cold of the deep sea left behind by the tide. Sailors know this boundary by name. Laisse. The highest mark. The place where the sea left something of itself behind.
